Volunteer at the Library
The Orange County Library System is always on the lookout for dependable volunteers. We have a variety of volunteer opportunities at the Orlando Public Library as well as our branch libraries.
Friends volunteer in various capacities, including:
Bookstore and Gift Shop Sales (Orlando Public Library)
Greet customers as they arrive, provide them with information regarding products and help them locate materials. Use register to total purchases and accept payments. Learn more.
Library Circulation Volunteer (Orlando Public Library)
Shelve materials; organize magazines and newspapers; assist with upkeep/order of shelves (shifting needs); Greeter, Catalog Helper, Other duties as needed.
Skills and Experience: Some customer service experience is preferred. This position requires attention to detail and a love of order/organization. Volunteer must be able to maneuver heavy carts and lift light to medium weights. The ideal volunteer will have a friendly manner and thrive working independently. Knowledge of alphabet required. Dewey Decimal System training provided. Knowledge of the alphabet is essential.
Library Events Volunteer (Orlando Public Library)
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:Greet and warmly welcome attendees at library events; distribute program information; orient patrons to the library or event site by pointing out locations of events, restrooms, water fountain, handout table, etc.; be available to answer questions and direct patrons as needed. Volunteers are sometimes needed to chaperone these events. Volunteers are here to be an adult presence, patrol the area, and occasionally help participants make good choices regarding their behavior. Some help setting up before the programs is requested.
Skills and Experience: All that is required is a warm, outgoing personality, ability to anticipate and react to needs of patrons and staff, and a desire to make people comfortable in the library. Events typically take place on weekday evenings. Some weekend events may need volunteers.
Library Shelving Assistant (all locations)
Shelve and prepare materials for shelving including casing and checking materials for parts; maintains library shelving appearance; shelf reading for accuracy and performs other tasks as needed. Sewing Studio Volunteer (Orlando Public Library)
No sewing experience necessary. Assist in organizing and sorting fabric, tools and notions. Prepare project kits for kid, teen and adult classes. Assist with upkeep of the sewing studio. Volunteer must be able to measure and cut fabric. Training will be provided.
Genealogy Center Volunteer (West Oaks Branch)
Assist staff with collection maintenance, provide assistance to customers inquiring about genealogy research tools and other duties as assigned. Learn more.
